This is an oil on wood painting, based on the mythological goddess Circe. When a crew ship of men gets washed up on her island she brings them in for a meal and wine. She stays cautious and spikes the wine only planning to activate it if the men were to threaten her. After dining the men started to gather that Circe was alone and when these intrusive thoughts occur she is quick to turn them to the swine they are. Not only do the empty glasses, knocked over the basket, and spilled walnuts create movement within the painting, but they can also demonstrate the commotion that caused the scene. The herbs and plants scattered on each end are to highlight whose table we are looking at. I represent her divinity through the use of silver in the tableware. For this same reason I also make these paintings larger than the typical still life, to make the objects either larger or similar to life-size.
